Our sponsorsHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Imagine not knowing where you will sleep tonight.
Imagine trying to pay rent on an annual income of less than $15,000 a year.
Imagine waking up tomorrow morning in your car and having to get ready for work.
In 2013, the YWCA of Calgary received over 4,000 requests from women, many with children, needing shelter for the night. Unfortunately we couldn’t help them all, more than 2,500 had to be turned away due to capacity. One in ten families in Calgary are at risk of becoming homeless, the YWCA offers help to many through our different emergency shelter and housing programs.
On May 1st we are keeping our Winter Emergency Shelter open for one additional night to host our fundraising event YWCA KEEP A ROOF OVER THEIR HEADSâ. The challenge for event participants is to raise at least $500 each and then experience what it is like to be homeless for just one night.
Beth has a good job, is elegant and intelligent, she is also homeless. Beth works in sales at a local clothing store during the day. She helps others find beautiful things, making them feel special. Each night, starting in November, Beth would arrive at the door of the YWCA Winter Emergency Response shelter to sleep. She was homeless, a victim of the devastating floods that affected so many in Calgary this past summer (2013). She lost everything, her home, her clothes, her memories and her ability to house herself.
