Where Your Dollars Go

In 2009, the YWCA of Calgary had to turn away 778 women from its housing program due to a lack of funds and resources.

The challenge this year is to raise $1,000 to sleep homeless for one night, on April 30, 2010 in the YWCA gymnasium. Register and start fundraising today and represent one of the 778 women the YWCA had to turn away in 2009.

The YWCA of Calgary does not believe that women should have to choose between personal safety and a place to call home. That’s why we provide safe and affordable housing for women and children in crisis or transition. Even with a good job, affordable housing can be hard to find in Calgary, and single mothers with children often live well below the poverty line.

The YWCA Mary Dover House is an 80-bed transitional home that offers safe, affordable and supportive housing. We also have six emergency bunk beds for single women, which accommodate the overflow from other shelters, including the YWCA Sheriff King Home. These beds are for single women only; the maximum stay is 14 days and are provided at no cost to the guest occupant.

Women who come to us are at critical turning points in their lives and we offer on-site counselling, referrals and advocacy in an environment that promotes positive change. The YWCA of Calgary is there to help clients move from dependence to independence.
